Based on introspective investigation into my early life, my paintings begin with memories. As I lay material down, the memory is supplanted by physical substance. Histories are surfaced over - layer upon layer, yet never completely wiped away.

A new picture can't replace past memory, and so the substance stands in lieu of it. Despite its insistence on some kind of reclamation, it takes on its own characteristics, and reveals the tactile, proprioceptive experience of recollection.
